What Makes it so special
The
Engine:
The vehicle sports a
Mercedes derived, Turbocharged, Intercooled
, OM616 diesel engine. This engine is also commonly called TD-2400 FT.
This
engine develops 90 BHP at 4000 rpm and 18.5 Kg/m of torque at
1800-2100 rpm. Being an Indirect Injection engine, it is super smooth
and super silent. The engine is built to last 2 to 3 lakh kilometers
with out overhaul. The power band of this engine is so wide that power
keeps flowing out smoothly from 1500 rpm all the way to 4200 rpm. The
engine does not have any electronics, so one thing less to worry about.

The Gear Box:
The vehicle has the world
famous, Mercedes derived G1-18 gear
box. The G1-18 Gearbox of Mercedes design is among the smoothest and
most reliable transmission in its class. The latest machinery &
process technologies are used for manufacture of the gears, shafts and
housings. The Drive train comprising of the Gearbox, Axles and
Propeller Shafts are precision manufactured in house. Force Motors uses
special alloys with high Molybdenum content to make gears with extra
strength for added reliability. The gears are not only hobbed &
shaved, but finished using a special high precision 'Honing' process -
to generate super smooth surfaces and exacting precision - to Mercedes
standard.

Each Gear pair is individually
matched & checked for noise. The
exacting assembly and testing procedure for the Gearbox assures life
long trouble free operation. (In 1999 Force Motors Exported 2000
gearboxes of G1-18 design to Mercedes Benz Germany, for use on Mercedes
vehicles in Europe).
The Transfer Case
and Differential locks:
This is perhaps the
most advanced feature of the vehicle. The Gurkha offers some
great features that buyers
of
new 4x4's partially are still dreaming of today, like a fully
synchronized 3 shaft transfer case that you can shift while driving
even into
low range 4WD. The transfer case is a fully floating divorced transfer
case that is built to last. The transfer case can also be ordered with
an auxiliary power
take off or PTO to operate a winch. The 100% locking differentials in
the front and rear axle that are manually activated by pulling the
levers next to the transfer case shifter. The diff-locks are worth
their weight in gold. CLICK HERE TO LEARN ABOUT DIFF-LOCKS.
The diff-locks enable you to get out of any
tricky situation.
The Frame:
The Gurkha features a
rare Tubular chassis. Most of the chassis manufactured today are made
out
of box sections. This is because of ease of manufacturing. However
Force motors, goes the extra mile in providing a tubular chassis for
superior performance. The tubular chassis is ultra flexible and strong
at
the same time. The frame is more rugged than of most new vehicles today
and this model has prooven its safety in numerous real life crashes on-
and off-road protecting its passengers.
The Suspension and
Handling:
The Gurkha features
a double wishbone independent front suspension with torsion bars and a
rear live axle with elliptical leaf springs. Both front and rear
axles have anti roll bar while the rear axle has additional stabilizer
bars. All these things mean nothing till you take a ride in the Gurkha
and are amazed by the ultra smooth ride even on the roughest roads. You
really have to ride it to believe it.
Despite being a big
vehicle the superb design of the suspension makes the Gurkha handle
very well both on and off road. The level of road holding and cornering
capacity is astonishing. The power steering makes the vehicle agile
while the front disk and rear drum brakes do an excellent job of
bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Passenger space and
comfort:
The space available
inside the Gurkha can be best described as cavernous. One has to sit
inside the vehicle to believe the amount of leg room and head room
available. The Gurkha (2750 mm) was
designed to carry 9 fully armed soldiers into battle. You can rest
assured that there will be enough space for you and your extended
family. A word of caution. The inside of the vehicle is functional,
minimalistic and spartan. The inside of
the Gurkha has been designed with a single minded objective of
maximizing passenger space and comfort. Not much attention has been paid
to aesthetics.
